Courage: What Is It?
According to Webster’s Dictionary, courage is the “strength of mind to carry on despite danger or difficulty.”
So we can conclude that courage is related to a brave heart, later attributed to the mind. Why brave? because you risk something, like reputation, life or material resources.
Why Is It Hard to Find the Courage of Being Yourself?
Being yourself sounds like a simple concept, doesn’t it? Just be who you are, embrace your unique quirks and qualities, and let your true self shine.
However, in reality, it is not always that easy. The courage to be yourself is something many of us struggle with, and there are several reasons why.
The Fear of Judgement
One of the main reasons why it’s hard to have the courage to be yourself is the fear of judgement. We live in a society that often values conformity and fitting in.
You may worry about what others will think if you deviate from the norm or express your true thoughts and feelings.
This fear of being judged can be paralyzing, causing you to hide behind masks and present a version of yourself that you think will be more acceptable to others.
But here’s the thing: when you constantly worry about what others think, you sacrifice your authentic self. You become a people-pleaser, constantly seeking validation and approval from others. And in the process, you lose touch with who you truly are.
The Pressure to Conform
Another reason why it’s difficult to have the courage to be yourself is the pressure to conform. From a young age, you are taught to follow societal norms and expectations.
So, you are conditioned to believe that there is a certain way to look, act, and think to be accepted and successful.
But the truth is, that conformity stifles individuality. It prevents you from exploring your unique passions, interests, and perspectives.
When you conform to societal expectations, you are essentially living someone else’s life, not your own. And deep down, we know that this is not fulfilling or authentic.
When Is the Courage of Being Yourself Necessary?
So, when is the courage to be yourself necessary? The answer is simple: always. Embracing your authentic self is essential for your happiness and fulfilment. When you are true to yourself, you can live a life that aligns with your values, passions, and purpose.
Being yourself is also necessary for creating genuine connections with others. When you show up authentically, you attract people who appreciate and accept you for who you truly are. These are the relationships that bring joy, support, and growth into your life.
Furthermore, the courage to be yourself is necessary for personal growth and self-discovery. When you embrace your authentic self, you give yourself permission to explore your passions, follow your dreams, and live a life of purpose. You become more self-aware and in tune with your desires and aspirations.
So, while it may be hard to have the courage to be yourself, it is a necessary journey to embark on.
It is a journey that requires self-acceptance, self-love, and the willingness to let go of the fear of judgment and the pressure to conform. Nonetheless, in the end, it’s a journey that leads to a life of authenticity, fulfilment, and true happiness.

How to Find the Courage to Be Yourself
Tough question, isn’t it? Fortunately, some solutions can help you. Start by defining the challenge, i.e. what kills your courage and then address the problem.
1. Meet the Monster
You probably heard about the fear of destruction. This is the most dangerous monster that kills the courage to be yourself.
To meet this monster better, do a short written exercise; Firstly, define what destruction means to you. Secondly, list all the situations when you dread destruction.
What or who else can sabotage the courage of being yourself? Think of the five people you are surrounded by every day. Are they brave enough to speak their say or do they discourage you from doing so?
What about the kind of information you feed your mind daily (books, news, podcasts) – do they encourage or discourage you from being yourself? How about social media – are you allowed to express your opinion freely?
2. Disarm the Monster Yourself
As you can read, the monster can be external or internal. The external one is easier to control. You can boycott the media (e.g. stop watching TV or reading the news online) or information and cut off toxic people, but surround yourself with the positive ones (more about it later in this article).
However, it is harder to cut off your mind which is an indispensable element of your survival on Earth. the ego, in particular, will try to “protect” you (or rather itself) from destruction. Conformism and not being different from the majority have been imprinted into your mind since childhood.
Nonetheless, when you are an adult, it IS possible to find inner-courage again. Yes, it can be uncomfortable at first but it IS worth the trouble.
Use Positive Self-Talk
Our thoughts have a powerful impact on our actions and emotions. By replacing negative self-talk with positive affirmations, you can shift your mindset and build confidence.
Remind yourself of your strengths, unique qualities, and the value you bring to the world. Repeat empowering statements like, “I am enough” or “I embrace my authenticity.”
Over time, this positive self-talk will become your new internal dialogue.
Practice Mirror Work
Looking at yourself in the mirror and speaking words of love and acceptance can be a transformative practice.
Stand in front of a mirror, look into your own eyes, and say kind and encouraging words to yourself. It may feel awkward at first, but this exercise can help you develop a deeper connection with yourself and boost your self-esteem.

Practice Affirmations
Affirmations are powerful statements that reinforce positive beliefs. Create a list of affirmations that reflect your authentic self and repeat them daily.
For example, “I embrace my uniqueness” or “I am confident in expressing my true self.” By consistently affirming these statements, you’ll start to believe and embody them.

Practice Visualization
Visualization is a technique used by many successful individuals to manifest their desires. Take a few moments each day to visualize yourself confidently expressing your true self. Imagine the positive reactions and connections you’ll make.
This practice helps rewire your brain and aligns your subconscious mind with your authentic self.
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment. By cultivating mindfulness, you can become more aware of your thoughts and emotions without judgment.
This awareness allows you to detach from fear-based thoughts and choose actions aligned with your authentic self. Engage in activities like meditation, deep breathing, or mindful walks to develop your mindfulness muscle.
Rewrite the Script in Your Body
Our bodies often hold onto past experiences and emotions, which can hinder our ability to be authentic. Take time to explore any physical sensations or tension in your body.
Release any negative energy by engaging in activities like yoga, dance, or massage. This process helps you reconnect with your body and create space for your true self to emerge.
3. Find Help Elsewhere to Be Brave
Being brave means that you face strong opposition from your family and friends, taught to live according to the mainstream standards – religious, scientific and based on culture.
For example, it is hard to abstain from unhealthy food during a big family gathering if all the family members eat this kind of food.
However, you are not in a helpless situation. Some people can support you. Even if your family is against your new ideas and lifestyle, there are over eight billion other people, among whom at least one person is thinking like you.
Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People
Building a supportive network of like-minded individuals can be instrumental in embracing your authenticity. Seek out communities, groups, or events where you can connect with people who share your values and interests.
Surrounding yourself with accepting and supportive individuals will provide a safe space to express yourself without fear of judgment. However, beware of toxic family members or friends.
Find a Mentor
Finding a mentor who has already walked the path of authenticity can provide valuable guidance and support.
Look for someone who embodies the qualities you admire and can offer insights into embracing your true self. Their wisdom and encouragement can help you navigate any challenges along the way.
Ask the Higher Beings for Help
If you believe in a higher power, don’t hesitate to ask for guidance and support. Whether it’s through prayer, meditation, or simply talking to the universe, reaching out to higher beings can provide comfort and reassurance. Trust that you are supported on your journey towards authenticity.
Remember, you are unique, worthy, and deserving of living a life that reflects your true essence.

4. Build Your Strength
Building the courage to be yourself is like going to the gym. When you practise some helpful habits regularly, miracles happen.
Train a New Habit
Building new habits takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. Identify one small action that aligns with your authentic self and commit to doing it consistently.
Whether it is speaking up in meetings, trying a new hobby, or setting boundaries, each step you take reinforces your authenticity and builds your confidence.
Fake It Until You Make It
While authenticity is about being true to yourself, sometimes it helps to “fake it until you make it.” Acting as if you are already confident and authentic can help you overcome self-doubt and step into your true self.
Remember, it’s a process, and each step forward brings you closer to living a life that reflects who you truly are.
